Schumer: Extend Undetectable Firearms Act To Stop Printed Guns
New York’s senior senator is calling for the renewal of a law strongly regulating “undetectable” weapons — including plastic guns that can be replicated with a 3D printer:
A federal law banning undetectable firearms expires early next month — and if it’s not reauthorized, get ready for a tidal wave of untraceable guns, a senior lawmaker said Sunday.
If the 25-year-old Undetectable Firearms Act is not extended, said Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), “Anyone can build a gun that could bypass a metal detector that guards an airport, sporting area, a school, or courthouse.”

Schumer said he’s working with two colleagues to extend the law now that 3D printers make plastic guns no longer a theoretical possibility but inevitable.
The 1988 act has been extended twice as technology has improved — but Schumer is anticipating challenges from pro-gun forces.
