Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin Convicted
Ray Nagin has been convicted on 20 of 21 counts against him.
Nagin was indicted in January 2013 on charges he accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes and truckloads of free granite for his family business in exchange for promoting the interests of a local businessman.
He also was charged with accepting thousands of dollars in payoffs from another businessman for his help in securing city contracts….
The charges he faced stemmed from his dealings with vendors involved in the Katrina recovery effort. Businessman Frank Fradella pleaded guilty in 2012 to bribing an unnamed public official with, among other things, a truckload of granite. Nagin’s family owns a granite countertop business.
Another businessman who worked with Fradella and is currently serving a 14-year sentence recently confirmed Fradella’s story and said he helped arrange the bribe.
