4-Year-Old Girl Brings 249 Bags Of Heroin To Day Care, Hands Them Out Thinking It’s Candy

A Delaware woman was arrested after her 4-year-old daughter brought 249 bags of heroin to a day care center in Selbyville and started handing the packets out to other children, thinking it was candy, according to state police.

“None of the packets were opened by any of the kids,” Master Cpl. Gary E. Fournier said on Monday night.

According to 11 Alive, several children were checked out at local hospitals as a precautionary measure, but they were released, he said.

In total, 3.735 grams of heroin were found, which is enough for a felony possession charge.

30-year-old Ashley R. Tull was charged on Monday with maintaining a drug property and three counts of child endangering, then freed on $6,000 secured bail.

Fournier said, “The investigation is continuing and more charges are forthcoming” while declining to say whose heroin it was.

When employees from the Hickory Tree Child Care Center saw children with small bags of white powder, the police were alerted at around 11:45 a.m., Fournier said.

The teachers promtly took the bags from the children.

When the packets were taken to the police department, the powder tested positive as heroin.

The 4-year-old girl took the heroin to school “unknowingly” after her mother gave her a different backpack when the family dog ruined hers overnight.

When the girl found the heroin, Fournier said, “thinking the packets were candy, she began passing them out to her classmates.”

The three endangerment charges were for the 4-year-old and two other children — a 9-year-old boy and 11-year-old girl — who live in the home, Fournier said.

The three children were placed with a relative and Tull was ordered to have no contact with them, Fournier said.
