You’d think the thieves would have the decency to wait until mass was over.

…they swiped a 5-by-3 foot crucifix from a Bronx church during services on Wednesday.

The $5,000 German-made wooden cross was lifted from the lobby of Padau Roman Catholic Church — near a sign proclaiming, “Jesus wants all of us to come to him” — between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., police sources said.

“I’m distressed. That crucifix means so much to the people here … I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Josu Iriondo, 75, pastor of the church

The shameless sinners likely planned the heist ahead of time — unscrewing bolts that attached the crucifix to a wall before returning to snatch it while parishioners were deep in prayer, Iriondo said.

As despicable as theft is, give them credit for the skill involved… )

The church by us locks up right after mass so vagrants and poor folks seeking shelter from the cold, don’t come in at night and sleep in the pews. Ironically, the sign outside the church says “God is always home”.

I have 2 catholic and 1 lutheran church somewhat close to me, and I was surprised to learn a few years ago that their parishioners take turns standing ‘watch’ at those churches, 6pm till 7am, 7 days a week, from sept 1st to march 31st, in case anyone needs shelter for the night. They let them in, give a light meal(usually sandwiches & water), give them a blanket & pillow for using a pew to bunk out on.
When I learned that, did a little digging/asking around, and found out that back in the 60’s, 1 of the catholic parish priests and the lutheran minister were brothers!, and that started it and got the other catholic church to opt in…. they been doing it ever since.
1 week before it starts, I go to each church, 1 service each and leave a donation envelope w/a note what the money is for(the food for that program).

I would look at the Alter boys first, they have always been shady from what I remember.

Hey! I stole communion and sips of wine and that’s it, oh and some smelling salts which I found in the customized pew for single kneelers along side of the guest priest chairs next to the alter.
A big giant crucifix? Check the Dons’ office.

why does any church feel it is necessary and important to have over priced idols. Why not have a spare no nonsense place of worship and use all that tithing money to actually do what jesus and god commanded, help your neighbors, feed the hungry…
