Photographer Beaten By Baltimore Police
[su_publirb]
City Paper photography editor J. M. Giordano was tackled and beaten by police while covering the Freddie Gray protests.
In a video shot by City Paper Managing Editor Baynard Woods you can see Giordano, wearing a green jacket, and a protester, both of whom had just been knocked to the ground by police, being beaten as Woods yells, “He’s a photographer! He’s press!”
Giordano says he was standing next to the protester in the video, facing the police line, at about 12:30 when someone threw a rock which hit a police officer’s shield.
“They mobilized,” he says. The police line moved forward and Giordano did not move fast enough for them. “I always move at the last second,” he says. Five or six police officers in riot gear hit Giordano and the other protester with their shields, knocking them to the ground.
“They just swarmed over me,” he says. “I got hit. My head hit the ground. They were hitting me, then someone pulled me out.”
“I kept shooting it,” he says. “As soon as I got up I started taking pictures.” He says the guy who was next to him (who did not throw anything, he is sure) got arrested and was loaded into a van. Joe was not. He thinks it is because police recognized him as a local reporter and figured arresting him would cause a backlash.
“They [police] tried to block me from shooting.”

It’s almost like the police don’t want anybodys respect anymore, unless they get it through sheer use of force. Right now it looks like all the police know how use is the stick. I sure would like to see the carrot used more than the stick. Law enforcement should be more than punishing people, it should be about encouraging people to do the right thing.

A lot of them seem to mistake fear for respect. Playground bullies with guns & badges.
whatthe46 April 26th, 2015 at 6:33 pm
no different than mob bosses. people didn’t respect them, they feared them.
mea_mark April 26th, 2015 at 6:38 pm
With increasing inequality they really aren’t much more than henchman for the 1%. Not much difference from the mob bosses of yesteryear.

Spot on! I respect Stephen Hawking, but I don’t worry that he’s gonna beat the crap outta me. Pretty sure I can outrun him. He’d probably kill me in endurance, though – I’m a former smoker.

now, that’s a butt hurt if ever to the whole of the AMERICAN police department. that’s how you take care of a situation. no one was tased, beaten, killed nor did they suffer a severed spine at the neck. thank you sweds (is that right? sweds) for getting there first!!!!! doesn’t hurt they are all hot too. (sorry)

Again, you misunderstand. Those are CRIMINALS. The most obvious things seem to blow right by you.

as if the Baltimore police let alone the Baltimore judicial system wasn’t watching the consequences of the furguson shooting.
only this time its more then obvious they could care less about human life or how to properly arrest people. I guess the Miranda Act is a running joke in baltimore

Black people killed by police, no comment from you
Black people start fire and that’s where you come in with condemnation?

so if someone from the Klan throws a bottle, it’s OK for the police to storm your Aryan compound and drag you off?
