Trump Misread Fusion Story To Defend His Nativist Views
Donald Trump told Don Lemon that if he wanted to see how correct his is about undocumented immigrants raping people, all he has to do is check out a story on Fusion that 80% of Mexican women crossing the border illegally are raped. However, as Jonathan Chait correctly notes, the story describes rapes alright, but not by immigrants.
The article describes the travails of undocumented-immigrant women who are frequently raped by smugglers and gang members on their journey into the United States. It does not describe rapes being committed by immigrants themselves. When Lemon pointed this out to Trump, the mogul barked, “Well, somebody’s doing the raping, Don! I mean somebody’s doing it! Who’s doing the raping? Who’s doing the raping?” The answer: “People who are not crossing the border.”
Chait’s other point is that mainstream conservatives are defending Trump, which makes them look as ridiculous as he does.
