The Tennessee man thought his wife stole the money that was supposed to go to the church.

Norman McKinney, 76, showed up at in the parking lot of the sheriff’s office Sunday afternoon, saying he shot his wife, according to WSOCTV.

When deputies arrived at the couple’s residence, they found Mae McKinney, 81, with a gunshot wound in the head.

She died overnight at a local hospital, according to the Johnson City Press.

Norman Tobey McKinney, 76, alerted Unicoi County Deputy Austin Miller to the shooting saying he believed he had just killed his wife, Sheriff Mike Hensley reported.

Sheriff Mike Hensley told the Johnson City Press, “According to him, he had put some money back for church tithes. He couldn’t’ find it. He basically accused her of taking the money.”

Investigator Ronnie Adkins said the couple argued for an hour before Norman McKinney grabbed a gun and pointed it at his wife, threatening to kill her.

McKinney told investigators that his wife, “slapped the gun, causing it to fire.”
