Carson’s Mom Contradicts His Hammer Story

Ben Carson’s mother has said her son has it wrong: she was the one with the hammer.
Across two interviews conducted in 1996 and 2002 by the Academy of Achievement Carson stated: ‘I tried to hit my mother in the head with a hammer. I would just become irrational because I would get so angry…’
And he repeated it last week on Fox News’s Kelly File.
Asked by Megyn Kelly: ‘Dr Carson I know that you’ve said this feels like a witch hunt but let me ask you flat out whether you stand by the claim that you as a young man, a 14-year-old boy, attempted to stab another boy and attacked your own mother with a hammer.’
He replied: ‘Those claims are absolutely true, you know I am 100 percent sure that they’re true and this is simply an attempt to smear and to deflect the argument as we’ve seen many times before.’ …
Now Daily Mail Online has unearthed an interview given by Carson’s mother, Sonya, to the Detroit Free Press’s Sunday magazine, Detroit, in 1988 in which she recounts her own recollection – rather different – of the incident.

Speaking then Mrs Carson was clear as the article reported: ‘His mother…remembers the time she and Bennie had a spat over clothes he wanted for school.
‘He raised his hand; she reached for the hammer she had out while working on the house. The two might really have tangled, she says, had not her older son Curtis….stepped in between them.’
She admitted at the time, ‘I’m still working on my temper…but God seems to have done Bennie a really big favor.’
