Facbook’s trending stories has been a mess lately.

A tabloid called The Daily Star pushed a conspiracy piece claiming to have proof that the World Trade Center was destroyed by bombs in a “controlled demolition,” and not by planes hijacked by terrorists. The Washington Post received a message from a Facebook representative, stating that the topic was removed from the “Trending” list as the story started to gain traction.

The social media site recently got rid of its “Trending News” staff favor of an algorithm that would headline stories based on shares and postings. Still, critics have noticed that the algorithm hasn’t been perfected, which has caused misleading or outright false stories to trend in recent weeks.
