Name Gaffe: Meet Mitt Romney’s Black Adopted Grandson
Binders full of women… likes to fire people… the mooching 47%ers … “corporations are people, my friend”… no one’s ever asked to see his birth certificate… he has some friends who are NASCAR team owners.
This may not be his own gaffe, but still…
On Twitter, former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney announced the adoption of his “22nd grandchild,” Kieran James Romney, who is the second twenty-second grandchild he’s acquired in two months.
The child, adopted by his son Ben and wife Andelynne, is black. The circumstances of his adoption are unknown.
Critics have been quick to note that the boy’s name, Kieran, means “black” in Gaelic.
“Kieran” is common name in Ireland, and though it does mean “black” or “dark,” it usually denotes a link to Fergus, King of Ulster, a figure in Irish legend.
The name descends from “Ciar,” one of Fergus’s sons, who is said to have given birth to the Ciarraige, a medieval Irish people who gave their name to County Kerry.
This one may win this year’s coveted Triple Facepalm Gaffe of 2013.
