Republicans brought the country beyond the brink, as they refused to do what they are Constitutionally called upon to do: fund the government. By holding the government hostage to an already-enacted and SCOTUS-approved, law, they’ve forced a shutdown.

The impact of the first government shutdown in 17 years began to be felt as the sun rose across America on Tuesday, hours after lawmakers failed to come to a deal to keep the lights on.

The Statue of Liberty closed its doors, fountains on the National Mall trickled out and the beloved “panda-cam” at the National Zoo went dark, all effects of Congress’ inability to keep the government funded.

As the midnight deadline came and went without an agreement, voters took to social media to voice their displeasure.

“Thanks for the shutdown and lack of pay,” Twyla Strogen wrote to #DearCongress on Twitter. “We, the public, your bosses, will return the favor at the polls.”
