An ALEC Candidate Goes Silent
There are situations where party affiliation is secondary to ties to a special interest group. One of the most powerful – and one that was under the radar until very recently – is the American Legislative Executive Council. ALEC, a tax-exempt organization backed by big businesses and conservative philanthropists, has appropriated state legislators to push versions of “model legislation” that have inflicted such monstrosities as ban minorities and college kids from voting Voter ID, smash the unions Right to Work, and Kill at Will “Stand Your Ground” laws at the state level.
And suddenly, the ALEC Republican candidate for the special state Senate election in Washington is no longer talking to the press:
[26th District Senate candidate Jan] Angel’s spokesman said she wasn’t giving any more media interviews between now and next month’s election. But he noted that she’s been elected by voters in the district three times, most recently with 59 percent of the vote.
We feel your pain, Jan. It’s just not a convenient time to answer those thorny questions about your real agenda – for example, any that may reference the fact that you are the Washington state chair of ALEC!
