Students at a Waukee, IA Middle School will be educated to the sound of shotgun blasts.

Timberline Middle School, now under construction, shares a property line with an outdoor gun club that was built “way out in the sticks” more than 50 years ago, according to Waukee school officials.

But the unincorporated Dallas County property now borders Waukee city limits. Directly to the east of the gun club is a developing 80-acre school campus and a residential subdivision…

The gun club’s southern field includes a 1-mile loop trail that shooters can walk and shoot from, directing all gunfire toward the center of the property. That trail comes within 650 feet of the new middle school near the eastern property line, according to an aerial map of the land.

To prevent students from wandering onto the shooting grounds, school officials plan to place a 6-foot berm, topped with a chain-link fence, between the gun club and school grounds.

Here’s an even better idea: don’t build it there.
