I lived near Dearborn, Michigan for about 7 years in another suburb of Detroit called Royal Oak. I’m not sure how much the ethic population has changed but back in the late 1990’s more than 40% of the population was of Arab descent. Also the Islamic Center of America was the largest Mosque in the United States.
After September 11th, 2001 Dearborn was a flash point for angry scapegoating of the Arab community and store shops were destroyed. It was so ugly. There were actually city consul meetings with proposals about “what to do if Dearborn rises up and tries to destroy us.”
Yet tensions never seem to reach the breaking point because the Arab community, to their credit, had become so Americanized and patriotic that within a year the tensions were forgotten. There was no longer a “they.” People just were who they are. Co-workers, neighbors, and even the Iraq war and the ensuing anti-Muslim ferver seemed to skip over this small corner of America because, despite time and time being baited by RWNJ’s (as we call them now) and xenophobes the Arab community never reacted with the same bitterness and hate.

He did this on Warren Avenue, the center of the largest proportional population of Arab-Americans of any city in the United States. Over 40,000 people of Arab descent live in Dearborn. In any other city in the world he would have been charged with some kind of a hate crime but Dearborn has become sadly used to these demonstrations and just ignores them.
*Edit Dearborn is a city of far less than 100,00 people.
