Rowan County, North Carolina, commissioners are launching an investigation, and the chairman is the target.  After a brief closed session Monday, commissioners took action in regard to Malcolm “Mac” Butner and the racially charged comments he made on Facebook, the Salisbury Post reports.

Butner refuses to resign after posting pro-Confederate, racist and anti-gay comments.

Butner-Confederate

In one Facebook post, he wrote, “Gee, they are all black. I guess the white folk could not get off because they were too busy working (and) being productive, good citizens.”

“THE PRIMARY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE LEADERS OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA AND THE UNION IS THAT CONFEDERATE LEADERS WERE GODLY GENTLEMEN AND THE UNION FOLKS WERE NOT,” he wrote in another post. (Republican caps, his)

In another he claims that liberals and Democrats “don’t have a principled bone in their body and they don’t care even if our constitutional republic is destroyed.”

“To hell with the lesbos, queers, liberals and baby killers,” he added.

The local NAACP is now demanding his immediate termination. “When you insult people, you don’t deserve the right to decide policy that would benefit him,” Scott Teemer, the president of Rowan County NAACP Chapter said.

County commissioners say there’s not much they can do because his Facebook comments were made during his personal time.

WSOC-TV reports, “Butner’s appointment as housing authority chairman expires in September. At that time, the county could choose not to re-elect him.”

Watch with my apologies for the auto-playback:

Butner says he is protected by the First Amendment. Indeed he is. Hopefully the NAACP can use their First Amendment rights to oust him in September

No responses to North Carolina Housing Official Refuses To Resign over Pro-Confederate, Racist Facebook Posts

Personally, I am getting tired of public officials using the first amendment to obfuscate the fact that public service means you work for all of the people, not just those who agree with you. When you make it clear you have contempt for some of the citizens who pay your salary, you should resign.

To those who would disagree, I ask you if a public official was found to be exercising his first amendment rights on his own time, using his own computer resources to advocate repeal of all laws prohibiting sex with children, would you also argue that this official has no obligation to resign?

If not, then to quote a learned court justice, STFU.

Not that I agree with anything that he has said. But unless he has done something in his official capacity, I find it difficult to have him removed for his bigotry.

If I did anything close to that on my Facebook page I’d be fired from my job. Heck I got censured 5 years ago for a pro gay marriage post that showed two guys kissing simply because my company’s name shows up when you hover a mouse over my name on Facebook.

And this guy is the Housing Authority Chair.

I know, you would think he was smarter then that….

It proves that anyone can get a job.

      • Pistol-Packing July 9th, 2014 at 10:15 am

well, For Starters, I would remove any company information from your facebook. Although I keep my Facebook very public, I dont list where I work on it. But, Dont get me wrong, the guy is an idiot for posting that.

I got one, the fact that he supports a treasonous regime that wishes the termination of the union.

    • Ty Ellison July 9th, 2014 at 6:09 am

As a housing official, he’s in a position to put his bigotry into practice.

      • Pistol-Packing July 9th, 2014 at 10:17 am

you would think that may be the case. But I dont think he has the power to implement any policy without going through the full board. I dont know this to be fact, but I would assume that would be the case.

as one poster already wrote, “why don’t these people suceed back to a Civil War reenactment?”

  4. BanditBasheert July 8th, 2014 at 5:12 pm

    Isn’t he cute? And ignorant.

  5. mea_mark July 8th, 2014 at 5:41 pm

The problem with amped up right-wing rhetoric is you get people that buy into it and lose all sense of perspective on reality, like this guy. At least he is not out there killing people, yet. Let’s hope he keeps his activities reserved to the first amendment and doesn’t escalate them to the second.

Wow! I am wondering if maybe we should just give a small plot of land down south for all of those Lost Causers.

Why does any of this surprise anyone? The lily-white North Carolina Republican Party sent Jesse Helms to the Senate for 24 years or so.
