Alabama Top Attorney: County Can’t Ban Guns At Polls
According to Alabama’s attorney general, a county commission lacks the authority to prohibit firearms at polling places. This should be good. I can’t imagine what could go wrong. It’s not like politics makes people angry or anything.
My vote is gonna count, dammit!
After voters began bringing guns to the polls on the June 3rd primary election, the Chambers County Commission sought the advice of Attorney General Luther Strange. In Chambers County, signs saying “no weapons” were posted at some precincts, but they were later removed.
The AP reports:
The attorney general’s advisory opinion says state law doesn’t give county commissions authority to ban weapons. But it says state and federal laws that ban weapons in public buildings such as courthouses and schools still apply when they are used as polling places. It also says churches and other private buildings used as polling places may ban guns.
The opinion applies to the runoff election July 15.
Voting day in Alabama will be like Gun Appreciation Day. Yippee ki yay, y’all.

Around here in Va., polling is largely done at schools, the courthouse or a community center. If it is like that in Alabama, they could ban guns.
Here they don’t like banning guns from various places and the NRA has argued to permit firearms in bars. They get real hepped up on that sort of thing, but remain strangely silent when they have gun shows where loaded firearms are banned. The radio ads can be quite explicit – they will have goons at the door to make sure you don’t bring a loaded gun in there.

They need a couple big black guys with assault rifles to show up on polling day and just sit there and they will figure out a way to fix this law real quick.

I keep thinking things like that, how fast the heads would spin if it were a handful of young black men carrying AR-15s into Target.
I find myself wishing it would happen just to witness the spectacle, and simultaneously praying it doesn’t happen because I don’t want to read about a bunch of black kids shot dead in Target by some Tea Partier “standing his ground.”
