A new video by the National Rifle Association, shows a spokesman advocating for the right of blind people to arm themselves in public. I’d hate to run into a blind open carry protest.

“Every law abiding, blind individual should be able to have whatever guns they want. And if you disagree with that statement or you haven’t thought it all the way through, you don’t take your rights seriously enough,” Dom Raso, an NRA News commentator, said.

Watch:

“Do you think because they’re blind that they’re going to start shooting in every direction and kill everyone? ,”Raso asks. “Fact is that it’s been proven that people that lack vision have an increased awareness of their hearing and spatial surroundings. The biggest concern I hear is having blind people carrying in public. Are you envisioning a person waiving a gun around or pointing it at somebody for no reason? Because that’s what it sounds like.”

Raso gunsplained to Guns.com that he believes if an authority figure can deny gun rights to a person just because he or she is blind, then they could take them away from other disabiled people as well.

“They could take rights away if you’re missing an arm or a leg,” Raso said.

That fear-inducing message is along the lines of, “Obummer’s is gonna get our guns so stockpile ’em!”

A GOP candidate said yesterday that she sometimes shoots with her eyes shut.

Big thanks to my anonymous tipster out there.

I’m not worried that every blind person with a gun will wave it around. That’s just a silly NRA strawman. I am worried that someone with an intent to do wrong could easily steal a gun from a blind person open carrying, or any open carry fanatic.

    • R.J. Carter August 5th, 2014 at 2:06 pm

I’m more worried he’ll hit pedestrians on the sidewalk while committing a drive-by.

      • MIAtheistGal August 5th, 2014 at 2:57 pm

That’s so bad. I still laughed though. 😉

  2. Abby Normal August 5th, 2014 at 1:19 pm

That guy just blew up my stupidmeter. Sarah Palin pegged it a few times but this guy just overwhelmed it and made it blow up into tiny little pieces. Damn. Stupidmeters are expensive too. Oh well. Off to Radio Shack to buy a new one.

  3. RioBravoHombre August 5th, 2014 at 1:28 pm

Yesterday, we had a story on an ammosexual who closes her eyes to practice killing in the dark. I guess the NRA heard about that moran, and said,”HEY! I know how to make that woman sound RATIONAL! Let’s demand that BLIND people be given guns, too! WHAT COULD GO WRONG?”

  4. tiredoftea August 5th, 2014 at 1:39 pm

Breaking NEWS! NRA confirms Spidey sense is real! “Fact is that it’s been proven that people that lack vision have an increased awareness of their hearing and spatial surroundings”

    • R.J. Carter August 5th, 2014 at 1:50 pm

      Spidey sense?

  5. uzza August 5th, 2014 at 1:45 pm

Wow, he kept a straight face through that whole thing. That’s an accomplishment!

    • tiredoftea August 5th, 2014 at 2:54 pm

He’s a true believer. No sense of humor, or shame, with them.

  6. R.J. Carter August 5th, 2014 at 1:50 pm

All that’s necessary to make this a feasible option is for the bad guys to respond “Polo” every time a blind gun owner says “Marco.”

    • tiredoftea August 5th, 2014 at 5:00 pm

Yes, true echo location to add to the Spidey sense that all blind people have.

  7. MarcoZandrini August 5th, 2014 at 1:59 pm

What next, guns in the confessional, guns in caskets, guns in purgatory???

  8. KABoink_after_wingnut_hacker August 5th, 2014 at 2:00 pm

Why do they need a video?
Wouldn’t an audio ad be more effective with blind people?

  9. Maxx44 August 5th, 2014 at 2:02 pm

Will it take a blind good guy with a gun to stop a blind bad guy with a gun?

  10. Roctuna August 5th, 2014 at 2:11 pm

Since we see sighted ammosexuals “waiving a gun around or pointing it at somebody for no reason”, why shouldn’t we expect the same crazy behavior from blind ammosexuals?

That bit about awareness of surroundings has some truthiness but no basis in fact. It reminds me of the fundies that claim that since the Loch Ness monster is a plesiosaur evolution must be false. Take one scientific falsehood and use it to “prove” another falsehood.

William was a day early with his Ray Charles video.

  11. Larry Schmitt August 5th, 2014 at 2:18 pm

“Do you think because they’re blind that they’re going to start shooting in every direction and kill everyone?” No, that’s what sighted people do. Notice in the drawing, even the dog has enough sense to be nervous. Which is more than the NRA has.

  12. Larry Schmitt August 5th, 2014 at 2:20 pm

I’m wondering how this even became an issue. Has a blind person ever asked for a gun license?

    • uzza August 5th, 2014 at 2:50 pm

It’s important to understand that most legally blind people still have a certain amount of vision. Lots of different things impair vision to a certain degree. Visual acuity of 20/200 is the standard (means you can make out at 20 feet what most people can see at 200). With Usher’s Syndrome, you can see fine but your field of vision shrinks so it’s like looking through a tube. Very few people actually can’t see anything at all,

Carey McWilliams in 2001, became the first legally blind person to acquire a concealed weapons permit. He answers questions here:

      • Larry Schmitt August 5th, 2014 at 3:35 pm

But, just as we don’t want someone with sight that poor to be driving a car, we probably don’t want most of them carrying firearms. Both tools can be dangerous even when used correctly, without adding wild cards.

        • ChrisVosburg August 5th, 2014 at 7:02 pm

Stevie Wonder (pictured below) is another blind guy who thinks this is a bad idea, telling Piers Morgan in an interview last year “Imagine me with a gun– It’s just crazy.”

        • uzza August 6th, 2014 at 10:06 am

You asked for the facts. I gave them to you.
Now you want to argue with me?

          • Larry Schmitt August 6th, 2014 at 10:13 am

I don’t think I was arguing with you, I was also stating a fact. It seems a bit odd to me that someone who couldn’t get a driver’s license because he can’t see well enough would be able to get a gun license. It’s hard enough for fully sighted people to hit what they aim at.

      • Anomaly 100 August 5th, 2014 at 9:13 pm

My brother is legally blind but he has a special device (sort of binocular-type thingies on glasses) which he can wear to enable him to see better. He has guns which he keeps locked up at home away from his beautiful daughter. He’s a Conservative who doesn’t go marching around with rifles slung across his back. But maybe that’s because he has a loving wife and doesn’t need to exhibit bravado to prove he’s a man.

As far as the totally blind, I wouldn’t go target shooting with one of them.

    • ChrisVosburg August 5th, 2014 at 6:05 pm

It may due to the ongoing debate over a new law in Iowa (passed last year) which permits the blind to purchase and open carry firearms.

    • Carla Akins August 7th, 2014 at 10:35 pm

There was a gentleman that lost his gun after shooting and killing a friend in an argument a couple of years ago. After found not guilty, he petitioned for his guns and won. http://endstandyourground.wordpress.com/2014/02/20/blind-man-in-florida-stand-your-ground-case-wants-guns-back/

  13. uzza August 5th, 2014 at 2:35 pm

Nibbling on sponge cake, can’t watch the sun bake,
All of those tourists, whatever they do
I’m legally blind, out of my damn mind,
Hoping to shoot someone maybe it’s you.

Fumbling for a gun in 2ndAmendmentville,
pretty sure I won’t get charged with assault.
Some people claim there’s Obama to blame,
    But I know, it’s the NRA’s fault.

      Thank you, Uzza Buffett!

  14. Judgeforyourself37 August 5th, 2014 at 3:08 pm

Just when you think that you have heard it all, along comes the good old NRA to prove that you just cannot fix stupid.

  15. John Tarter August 5th, 2014 at 3:28 pm

I once met a blind car transmission technician. So, if his sense of touch was that good, I’ll bet blind people’s send of smell and hearing is just as sharp. In this day and age, how can anyone be against equal rights for the handicapped?

  16. ChrisVosburg August 5th, 2014 at 4:52 pm

Could ask a blind guy how he feels about this, I guess.

Oh , here’s one (pictured below looking badasser than Samuel L Jackson in beret and shades).

Playwright Lynn Manning may be a bit biased on the whole handgun violence thing, ’cause he got shot in the face in a bar here in Hollywood back in the seventies, rendering him sightless, and ending a promising career as a graphic artist. I first met him a couple years thereafter (down the pub, wonder that he got up the courage to venture back into one) and we been pals ever since.

He wrote “Shoot” back in the early nineties after an argument with a blind friend who wanted to buy a gun for self-protection, and Lynn told him at the time it was bad enough that sighted people had ’em. Yep “Shoot” is about a blind guy who buys a gun.

Some sample badass dialog from “Donny,” after he’s just fired a shot into the air to scare off an attack on a friend: Yeah, the next punk that fucks with this blind man better be able to outrun a bullet; and do it without touchin’ the ground. ‘Cause if I hear him, I can hit him.

Damn, he writes better than me.

  17. David William Gordon August 5th, 2014 at 6:17 pm

Thank you for your oversimplification. In case you didn’t already know this, mostly it’s poor people who live in the country who hunt and protect their far-from-the-nearest-cop-shop-home with guns… In this case, it is the city yuppy liberal who is exercising class warfare against people he or she typifies as being inbred, ugly, unfashionable, and uncool. Fuck you and your high-horse. Also, before you all start assuming anything about me, I am an anti-authoritarian in all ways: atheist, anarchist/(left)libertarian, and generally anti-authority-figures such as both yourself AND the NRA, whom I don’t fully support, AND I do not like Conservatives for the most part… Conservatives always bludgeon others over the head with their religious “morals” in the SAME WAY that Liberals bludgeon others over the head in the name of both Political Correctness AND Popular Opinion. And yes, the vision-impaired should be allowed to own a gun and use it with assistance at the range… the blind should NOT be given a concealed carry permit or be allowed to go hunting. Oh and this false dichotomy of us-vs-them is really really ignorant and stupid. Well, they said that, so I believe in the opposite! And everything anyone within my party says is the unquestionable truth! Bullshit, every politician lies and has a hidden agenda, even the so-called libertarian candidates. So go ahead and blame guns and the industry for things individuals suffering from the actual cause of the increased violence in this country have done. Your war on guns is like Reagan’s war on drugs. wake the fuck up people.

    • ChrisVosburg August 5th, 2014 at 6:58 pm

      Feel better now?

    • edmeyer_able August 5th, 2014 at 9:01 pm

I for one do not blame inanimate objects for the carnage that is wrought upon our society. I blame irresponsible adults for leaving objects that could so easily be secured from doing great harm to our young. I blame an industry that maximizes profits for their shareholders over the safety of the general public. I blame an organization that steals from their members under the premise that they are protecting some god given right to possess a weapon meant for waging war. Without a central authority we would be no better than the animal kingdom and everyone could do as they please and no one would be safe. Men decided a long time ago that this was best way all could live in relative safety, if you disagree maybe you should think about leaving before you meet someone who wants what you have and decides to take it from you at any cost.

You need to deal with your anger issues.

      • David William Gordon August 8th, 2014 at 10:09 am

you need to learn how to reply to a comment without sounding self-righteous. Simply saying that which you said means absolutely nothing. Why do vacuous people like you feel the need to say anything at all? You and your ilk’s utter lack of communication and your smugness in thinking that simply saying little twitter-friendly meaningless one liners is why I get so angry in the 1st place. uck youi. Conservatives say I need Jesus, and liberals say I need phara drugs. I say you both are equally stupid and need to STFU.

        • Carla Akins August 8th, 2014 at 10:39 am

And I say you’re a dick and offer nothing of value. You can find somewhere else to play for the next 30 days.

  18. Keen Edge August 7th, 2014 at 10:23 pm

I can’t believe anyone would want to take a blind person’s right to protect themselves in his or her own home. The comments about hunting are beyond asinine and are are offensive. You are actually saying because a person is blind they don’t have the sense to safely own and even discharge a firearm if necessity dictates. A pistol is a close quarters weapon. I’m sure a blind person would be just fine in their own home.

    • Carla Akins August 7th, 2014 at 10:29 pm

And would they know whom they’re shooting at? Should we allow them to drive as well? It’s not discrimination, it’s common sense.

      • Keen Edge August 27th, 2014 at 10:00 am

Of course they would know. If I blind folded you are you saying you couldn’t find out who is in your own home or if they had bad intent? Maybe you are thinking of deaf mutes with advanced Parkinson’s.

        • Carla Akins August 27th, 2014 at 12:11 pm

Fine, the blind person with the gun can live in your home. Better hope you never come off off-0schedule, invite guests have have someone show up unexpectedly. Pointing and firing a gun when you’re unsure of the target or what might be between the gun and target – is a bad idea even if you have perfect sight. Anything less than knowing exactly what you’re shooting at is irresponsible and criminal.
