Louis Venuto and his 2-year-old daughter were cleaning up a rental car on Friday after a trip to Cocoa Beach when the child picked up a loaded .45 caliber handgun with the safety off, which had been left in the car.

[su_center_ad]“There were a bunch of them (toys) on the floor, and we were cleaning up the car, and I said, ‘Chloe, pick your toys up,’” Venuto said. “She was gathering them all up, and that’s when she must’ve spotted it.”

According to NBC, the loaded gun had been in the car the entire time Venuto and his family were renting it.

“You know, she’s talking, ‘Oh, here’s my Minnie, there’s my Sophia,’ and she got quiet,” Venuto said. “And I quick took a look and that’s when I seen her grab it.”

Venuto quickly secured the gun, then called West Sunrise Enterprise where he rented the Toyota Avalon sedan on Thursday morning.

The manager said he would call him back but never did.

NBC 6 received a statement from a representative of the company which read in part, “…The safety of our customers is our top priority, and we are thoroughly investigating this situation…”

“You’re supposed to vacuum and clean the car before the next customer rents,” Venuto said. “Enterprise just failed at that epically.”

Police took custody of the weapon after Venuto alerted them.

Police are trying to determine the owner of the gun.

Is the new NRA mantra going to be “good cars with guns”? I’m so glad no one was hurt, and I do hope the cops follow up. I’m guessing that there will be a job opening for a car detailer at the rental shop, too.

She didn’t need the stand your ground defense either.

will be interesting to see what PD comes up with…some upstanding NRA member I’ll bet

They have a record of everyone who rented that car. NO problem following up on the renters. Just give the list to the cops. They would see if anyone on the list has a record.

You would think. Most likely makes too much sense.

    • whatthe46 September 28th, 2014 at 4:16 pm

      my first thought.

Perhaps this is a new policy for Enterprise? You know, in case anybody needs to stand their ground, not only does Enterprise pick you up, they have your back.

The NRA’s guns anywhere, anytime for anyone policy is working just fine.

When will people wake up…what if that gun went off and killed that little girl or her father? Tell me gun nutz would you make excuses about your dubios right to carry a penis substitute?

    • forpeace September 28th, 2014 at 5:03 pm

I’m sure NRA and ALEC would have been fine with that!

      • tracey marie September 28th, 2014 at 7:25 pm

the excuses would have been flying and the deflection to Obama will be swift

Check to see who was the last person who rented that car in Florida.

You never know, it might have been George Zimmerman.

    • whatthe46 September 28th, 2014 at 5:40 pm

      you’re good.

      • forpeace September 28th, 2014 at 6:32 pm

Florida/gun brings George Zimmerman to my mind! lol

HOW MANY BULLETS WERE MISSING ? WHO HAS BEEN SHOT IN FLA IN THE PAST MONTH ? 2 MONTH ?

  9. majii September 28th, 2014 at 6:33 pm

What a precious little girl! I’m glad that she’s safe, and that her dad was around when she found the gun among her toys. It seems that Enterprise is trying to avoid being sued by Mr. Venuto by its rep talking out of both sides of his/her mouth. How can safety be a top priority when one of your cleaning crew missed a gun left in one of your vehicles by another customer? I don’t rent cars very often, but the next time that I do, I’m checking the sucker myself.

Since this happened in Florida, I’d be surprised if I DIDN’T find a loaded weapon in the car. know that sounds harsh, but given the stories coming out of Florida in the past couple of months, it seems like “guns everywhere” is a policy in that state.

    • demead September 28th, 2014 at 11:06 pm

Well Bunya, Florida didn’t USE to be like this. But, if you ever come here you will probably understand. Things have changed. Between the gangs, immigrants from EVERYWHERE-lots without any moral standing or beliefs as well as the LOW pay where people are doing things they wouldn’t normally do JUST to survive…….it has become quite the cesspool.

      • jasperjava September 29th, 2014 at 12:23 am

The cesspool is not from the immigrants. It’s from the bigots like the one you see in the mirror.

        • demead September 29th, 2014 at 7:55 am

Whatever. I see you didn’t comment on the gangs, does that make you a bigot? Just calling it like it is.

“Police are trying to determine the owner of the gun.”

Gee, if only there was a database of some kind to track something like this. Oh right, this is ‘Murica…..
