‘Merry Christmas’ Removed From Roadside After Complaint
The Department of Public Works was told by the Marshfield, MA building commission that the sign was too large.
[su_center_ad]Workers have removed a flashing road sign with a message of Merry Christmas – first from public property and then from private land – at the request of town officials.
[su_thin_right_skyscraper_ad]In an effort to spread some holiday cheer, Steve Barber, a public works employee and chairman of the local union, said his department last week put a flashing road sign used for construction at an intersection on Route 139. The sign read “Merry Christmas to all. In God we trust.”
The sign was removed the same day at the request of officials who didn’t want the construction sign paid for by the town used for that purpose.
Barber said Highway Safety Systems in Hanover then offered the department a sign free of charge, which employees then placed on private land on Plain Street. The sign read “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year” from the Marshfield DPW Local 1700.
“We were told it couldn’t say Marshfield DPW, so we ended up changing it, and then we had it taken away,” Barber said. “It was totally innocent. We see other towns all decked out and we just wanted to wish holiday cheer.”
Barber said the sign had nothing to do with the recent controversy over the school committee’s decision to change “Christmas vacation” to “holiday break” on the school calendar.

This year is the first time I’ve ever gotten into the Christmas spirit. I lived in NYC for so long and the apartments in Manhattan are small, so I never got a tree. I moved to Virginia about 6 months ago. I had a blast putting up the tree, decorating, etc. I’ve been missing out!

I usually do not do a tree, maybe one outside in the courtyard. But I do love all the garland and wreaths. I have at least 14 wreaths I put up around the courtyard, wherever you are in the house you see them.

The low-photon days are upon us. Soon we will get more of the Sun’s energy every day. Joy be upon us; all hail the return of the Sun.

I have no problem with Merry Christmas, but in God we trust I do. Maybe they should have just said ‘In Santa We Trust’ :P.

Very bad form Liberaland – the headline does not match the story – where does your headline say anything about In God We Trust – the truly objectionable thing in this story.
