broadwell_2396433b[su_right_ad]Remember the days when some Republicans were touting The Hero Called Petraeus® as a potential presidential candidate?

FBI and Justice Department prosecutors have recommended bringing criminal charges against former CIA chief David Petraeus for improperly providing classified information to a female Army Reserve officer with whom he was having an affair, The New York Times reported on Friday.

The newspaper cited officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. The Justice Department investigation focuses on whether Petraeus gave the woman, Paula Broadwell, access to his CIA email account and other highly classified information. The Times said officials have recommended felony charges.

The recommendations leave U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder with a decision to make on whether to seek an indictment against Petraeus, who quit his CIA post in 2012 after the extramarital affair became publicly known. Petraeus also is one of the leading U.S. military commanders in recent times, having served as commander of American forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Times reported that Petraeus has indicated to the Justice Department that he has no interest in a plea deal that would enable him to avoid a trial. Petraeus has said he did not provide classified information to Broadwell, who was writing his biography at the time of the affair.

A lawyer for Petraeus, Robert Barnett, declined comment.

Only because the wolf is now guarding the hen house. Holder should indict himself for his many crimes.

Please enumerate his crimes, and please include the actual law he is accused of violating. You make the accusation, but can you back it up?

C’mon, if the guy gets indicted that’s practically the Seal of Approval for Republican presidential candidacy. Best thing that could’ve happened to him.

  4. Spirit of America January 9th, 2015 at 10:32 pm

“Remember the days when some Republicans were touting The Hero Called Petraeus® as a potential presidential candidate?”

Yes, I do. I also remember the day Pres Obama nominated him for the CIA post. I also remember when Pres Obama said this:

“David Petraeus has provided extraordinary service to the United States
for decades. By any measure, he was one of the outstanding General
officers of his generation, helping our military adapt to new
challenges, and leading our men and women in uniform through a
remarkable period of service in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he helped
our nation put those wars on a path to a responsible end. As Director of
the Central Intelligence Agency, he has continued to serve with
characteristic intellectual rigor, dedication, and patriotism. By any
measure, through his lifetime of service David Petraeus has made our
    country safer and stronger.”

If enough evidence is there to go to trial, do so. If enough evidence is there to convict, do so. But what is being said was done doesn’t constitute betray, so no, moveon.org will still not be correct.

    • dave-dr-gonzo January 9th, 2015 at 10:56 pm

No. MoveOn’s original point was not only well argued and supported by fact, but was, well, pretty damn prescient.

And hell yeah, it looks like they have a case, so put The Hero Called Petraeus® on trial.

      • Spirit of America January 9th, 2015 at 11:05 pm

No, it wasn’t well argued or correct.
Not to mention, there was no ‘betrayal’; I sincerely doubt Pres Obama would appoint a betrayer to head the CIA and then speak so glowingly of him upon resignation.
Or are you suggesting POTUS is a liar?

        • bpollen January 10th, 2015 at 4:45 am

“Or are you suggesting POTUS is a liar?”

There’s a whole network that has that covered.

This is outrageous and an insult to all who have done their duty to protect America. Holder is the most political AG of our time. He is the first AG to be held in contempt of the U.S. Congress, lied before that same Congress, and also went after journalists in violation of the 1st Amendment. He does nothing against IRS employees who violated the political rights of certain citizens and did next to nothing against his own agents who ran guns to Mexico. Unbelievable!

    • dave-dr-gonzo January 9th, 2015 at 10:54 pm

“Holder is the most political AG of our time.”

      More political than Alberto Gonzales?

      You’re frakklin’ HILARIOUS, Wayoff!

Holder should stand tall. He is the first AG to be held in contempt NOT by Congress (which is two separate chambers), but by the most politically corrupt (and GOP-controlled) House of Representatives of our time.

And there’s no question that the main reason many confederate House members voted Holder in contempt is because he’s, well, not white and willing to fluff Wall Street like they are.

And Wayoff, I LOVE that you mentioned that Holder “does nothing against IRS employees who [you claim] violated the political rights of certain citizens.”

Most of those citizens, it turns out, worked for liberal organizations (The Wall Street Journal).

And guess what? The IRS’s GUIDELINES violate the letter of the law. A reading of the federal law and court precedent puts those IRS employees who “violated” the political rights of organizations to use money as speech on the RIGHT side of the law.

And you, sir, are a one-man punchline.

      You’re welcome!

And you can’t even get your facts straight. And how many times did Lois Lerner take the 5th?

          ______

          So what??

You take the Fifth because the government can’t be trusted
and what the truth is, and what the government thinks the truth is, are sometimes two very different things.
(Just putting an (R) after a politician’s name does not mean that they are magically not included in “government”).
You take the Fifth because even if you didn’t do anything
wrong your statements can be used as building blocks in dishonest, or malicious, or politically motivated prosecutions against you.

If you answer questions truthfully the government may still
decide you are lying and prosecute you for lying.

If you accept the proposition that the government targets
organizations for IRS scrutiny because of their political views, and you still say things like “why take the Fifth if you have nothing to hide”,then I think you suffer from, either willful ignorance or cognitive dissonance.

When anything you claim happened to a far, far greater degree under Bush, and can be shown to ACTUALLY be EXACTLY what you falsely claim Obama did…
          I wouldn’t talk.
          At least fact check first.

        • granpa.usthai January 10th, 2015 at 9:12 am

meanwhile the Republican controlled Congress does nothing at all except waste gazillions of TAX DOLLARS on preppy style hearings for the prima donna of the month? Biggest criminals of all – with the criminal records to prove it.

        • StoneyCurtisll January 11th, 2015 at 1:08 pm

“taking the 5th” is not an indication of guilt, ya fool..
It’s called exercising your constitutional right..
Just like owning a gun, Free Speech, or freedom of religion..

And if ya dont like it, Move to North Korea, cause they dont like it there either.

“This is outrageous and an insult to all who have done their duty to protect America.”
      Uh no Skippy.
Lots and lots of us veterans went through an entire career without having extra marital affairs with subordinates, and compromising classified information. If the allegations are true, then it’s Patraeus who has betrayed his country, his oath AND the honor code. Dismissing the allegations just because of your racism and hatred of the AG doesn’t change the facts.

      • rg9rts January 10th, 2015 at 5:07 am

How about nailing Pete Kings butt for spilling classified info from his committee about Jordan

You’re one to talk about “an insult to those who have done their duty to protect America”.

Just a few months ago, you declared that you were “not all that aggrieved” about US troops coming home in coffins and body bags, as long as they died in needless wars for profit.

. He is the first AG to be held in contempt of the U.S. Congress,

      _______

And with THIS Congress, that means absolutely nothing.

Meanwhile, remember Alberto Gonzales’ and Andrew H. Card’ visit to Ashcroft’s hospital room???

Remember Bush’s ACTUAL IRS abuse for political purposes?

Remember Bush’s gun running to Mexico????

      I wouldn’t talk.

    ….

The last time Democrats went to war promising the complete utter
destruction of the enemy was when Franklin Delano Roosevelt
declared war on Japan and Germany on December 8, 1941.
We are witnessing a declaration of war against George W. Bush,
his administration and any government employee that did anything
Democrats now think of as wrong.
They would like to do an ISIS thing, but will settle for jail.

    • arc99 January 10th, 2015 at 5:24 pm

We are witnessing the Justice Dept investigation into the possibility that Gen. Petraeus committed a federal crime.

I do not expect whiney right wingers to understand the basic concept that it is the job of the Justice Dept to conduct such investigations, regardless of delusional right wing conspiracy theories such as yours.

Reality is not a strong suit for most of you.
