US-Built Ebola Centers Empty As Outbreak Fades

The U.S. military sent about 3,000 troops to West Africa to build centers…in recent months. They were intended as a crucial safeguard against an epidemic that flared in unpredictable, deadly waves. But as the outbreak fades in Liberia, it has become clear that the disease had already drastically subsided before the first American centers were completed. Several of the U.S.-built units haven’t seen a single patient infected with Ebola.
It now appears that the alarming epidemiological predictions that in large part prompted the U.S. aid effort here were far too bleak. Although future flare-ups of the disease are possible, the near-empty Ebola centers tell the story of an aggressive American military and civilian response that occurred too late to help the bulk of the more than 8,300 Liberians who became infected. Last week, even as international aid organizations built yet more Ebola centers, there was an average of less than one new case reported in Liberia per day.
“If they had been built when we needed them, it wouldn’t have been too much,” said Moses Massaquoi, the Liberian government’s chairman for Ebola case management. “But they were too late.”

I thought it was “unpredictable.”
This was a terrible disease that, according to the OP, killed over 8,300 Liberians.
I am proud my country and my president responded, trying to help. If some of the help was late in getting there, that’s too bad.
But I’m glad we responded and see no reason to club the effort.
A couple weeks ago on NPR I heard that about 3/4 of the groups over there helping out were Christian groups.
Maybe that’s why Alan wants to throw stones…..

That’s the problem right there. We pay far too much attention to fringe loons. Just look around at this site.
It’s one extremist kook after the other and one impossible notion after the other.
Making it worse is people seem to have no more sense of balance, they regard these goofballs as having the same gravitas, influence and power as those who actually do wield power and have influence.
Just as we see right wingers spreading fear, so too do we see chicken littles on the Left running around waving their arms like Horshak, shouting we’re on the verge of some apocalyptic disaster with a theocracy and no rights and every imaginable evil since time began coming upon us.
It’s as if they see the kooks on the Right and want to make sure the Left has kooks of our own so they’re morphing into Left wing kooks in response to the Right wing kooks.
When all the attention is on the looney tunes, there’s no room for serious discussion on serious topics.
