Partially defending Donald Trump on Morning Joe, former New York Mayor gave credence to reports of Muslims in New Jersey cheering the toppling of the World Trade Center.

Giuliani, who served as NYC’s mayor during the terrorist attacks on 9/11, was asked by co-host Mika Brzezinski about Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump‘s claim that he witnesses people cheering in Jersey City that day. Before she could finish her question, Giuliani immediately jumped in with an answer.

“I was, as you know, deeply involved in it. I heard reports of such things in New Jersey [and] in New York. I didn’t see it.”

“You never saw news reports about it?” co-host Joe Scarboroughasked the ex-mayor.

“I really saw a Washington Post article [from back then] describing some kind of celebrations, but no, I didn’t see news reports at the time,” he said.

Scarborough then asked panelist Tom Brokaw to chime in on Trump’s comments since he anchored NBC Nightly News at the time of the attacks.

“There is no authenticity to that based on what mayors in New Jersey saw, what police chiefs saw, what people on the streets saw. There’s no one who’s come forward and said, ‘There were thousands and thousands of people cheering.’
