Reality show + fake bomb + airport = stupid stunt leads to arrests
A film crew linked to CNBC was arrested Thursday for trying to smuggle a fake bomb through a security checkpoint Newark International Airport, authorities said.
The seven-member team was grabbed by Port Authority cops at the New Jersey airport’s Terminal C at about 3 p.m. after the realistic-looking bomb was found in their carryon luggage. The suspects, who are part of a reality TV show called “Staten Island Hustle,” admitted that they wanted to record the Transportation Security Administration’s reactions when they found the “bomb,” sources with knowledge of the case said.
They also wanted to film the mass panic that they had hoped would ensue, sources said.
Because a freaked-out crowd trampling each other and causing serious injury or death is just so entertaining!
CNBC has been gravitating away from business-oriented prime-time programming toward infotainment:
The network’s three new series are “BYOB: Be Your Own Boss,” premiering on Feb. 27, “Staten Island Hustle,” which is coming in spring and “Deadly Rich,” which will air in summer. “BYOB” will follow small-business expert Dennis Mulhannon as he helps people become their own boss in a week by buying their dream business. “Staten Island Hustle” centers on a group of life-long friends and investors from Staten Island, and “Deadly Rich” goes into famous murder cases involving the wealthy.
Honestly, a viewer could learn more about business from one episode of A&E’s “Storage Wars” than a full season of “Staten Island Hustle”. Someone at CNBC needs to be fired.
